- Why do you use Red 40 Lake?
- Unfortunately, since fruit pigments are strictly banned by the FDA for use in cosmetics, there's only one natural option for red: carmine. The reason we chose to not use carmine is the inhumane production process as it takes close to 100,000 female bugs to manufacture about a pound of it. We chose Red 40 Lake as it's the only red colorant except carmine allowed by the FDA for use in all cosmetics. It's also the only one approved as a food additive as well. The total daily exposure to Red 40 Lake in Desire with normal usage is about 1/1000 or 0.1% of the ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake) in the EU. And that is if you eat everything that you put on your lips.
