Normal Skin
Condition
A healthy looking complexion, free from breakouts, over-sensitivity and dryness.
Cause
Often bestowed upon the young, the image of picture-perfect clear skin, smooth and line-free all over. From about the age of 25 however, things start to happen and in most cases it tends to take a downward descent. Skin renews itself every two to three weeks in younger women (up to twice as long when we are older) offering repeated opportunities for improvement - thus the perfect looking complexion!
The visible outermost layer of skin, which protects the inner layers from the world, is made up of hardened rigid skin cells. As these die, they loosen and are shed, then instantly replaced by new cells. Both UV light and free radicals cause the collagen fibers, which should lay straight and orderly, to become contorted, causing the skin to line, sag and shrivel. Sun exposure can at least be avoided where possible. The majority of harm is done before you are 18, so if you are young - start using an SPF early and if you have younger children, ensure they are well protected too.
Additional Information
If you are young and have normal skin - continue to take great care of your complexion. Avoid sunbathing at all times and regularly use a recommended SPF. If you do not smoke, drink excessive amounts of alcohol and have a good diet, the benefits of having healthy looking skin should stay with you longer. Of course hormonal changes can and do happen at any time, especially when you are very young. If you do notice any change in your complexion that does not seem to be of the norm - consult a Dermatologist immediately.
If you are older and have normal skin - congratulations! It can and does happen that mature adults have healthy normal complexions, a lot of it can be hereditary and a lot of it can be just plain luck. One of the biggest contributing factors to aging gracefully and looking younger than your years is staying out of the sun and not getting baked. In most cases this damage goes unnoticed until you are in your mid twenties, and of course by then, the damage is done. If you look at the skin of people from countries that do not have continual hot sun, where they are tempted to lie out and bake themselves, you will notice their skin has fewer markings from sun damage and has a translucent appearance to it.
