Psoriasis Skin
Condition
Raised red patches of skin covered with silvery scales. Commonly appearing on knees, elbows and scalp.
Cause
Certain genes have been identified as being linked to psoriasis. It appears, however, that a genetic tendency needs to be triggered off by such things as injury, throat infection, certain drugs and physical and emotional stress. The immune system is somehow mistakenly triggered, which speeds up the growth cycle of skin cells. A normal skin cell will mature and shed every 28 to 30 day cycle. However, a psoriatic skin cell will take only three to four days to mature and move to the surface and instead of shedding, the cells accumulate, forming lesions. There are considerable variations in it’s intensity that can range from just a small patch to areas of where much of the body is affected. It is a condition that can be physically and psychologically distressing and as of yet, there is no known cure.

The sheer unpredictable nature of this condition makes treatment challenging for many sufferers. Although there is no known cure for Psoriasis, there are a wide range of treatments available, but no single treatment necessarily works for everyone, however, something will work for most people. It is therefore important to be open-minded and in many cases, patient whilst working with your Integrative Doctor, or Dermatologist.
